NASA's EmDrive has first been proposed 20 years ago by Roger Shawyer. It is a cone shaped closed cavity in which microwaves bounce back and forth, producing an unexplained thrust. Several theories have been brought forward to explain the phenomenon. A recently published peer-reviewed paper by NASA scientists presents evidence for a working prototype of the EmDrive, ruling out several sources of error that have been an issue with previous experiments. We discussed the working principle of the EmDrive, the theories that may explain the phenomenon, and the sources of error that have been ruled out. Opinions were divided over whether or not the results presented in this paper were conclusive.
This journal club took place on Thursday, 15th of December, between 4-6pm in the SMC kitchen. Number of attendees: 9. Paul and Jenny brought minced pies and drinks. The paper was suggested by Jenny.
We will be back in the new year with our first meeting scheduled for Thursday the 12th of January.
