In this journal club we discussed the work by Anthony Atala, in particular his highly cited paper on artificial bladder transplants. [1] The bladders were grown from the patients' own bladder cells, which were obtained through biopsies. These cells were then grown on a biodegradable scaffold into an artificial bladder. We discussed the techniques that are used to develop these scaffolds and to grow and train the artificial bladders. Regenerative medicine has been in recent news due to the Macchiarini scandal at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. We discussed similarities and differences between Macchiarini's and Atala's procedures.
In other scientific news was ESA's Mars probe Schiaparelli. The probe was expected to land on Mars on Wednesday, 19th October, but contact to it was lost during landing. We also discussed the gene-editing technique CRISPR and its potential implications on society.
